Cityscapes
Being born and raised in London, its only natural that when I decide to tackle a cityscape, London will feature a fair bit, although not exclusively. The appeal for me in cityscapes is the structural element rather than the teaming population. I like the way modern structures rub shoulders with buildings from bygone eras creating a visual puzzle all inter-linking to create a 3D abstract work of art. In my semi abstract cityscapes I am using only gestural marks, lines, blocks of colours sometimes monochrome to convey the overall image and sense of the urban landscape and steering well away from fine detailed components, thus leaving you the viewer to fill in the gaps and create the atmosphere.
There are many great Cityscape/urbanscape artworks out there from the past and current times from which to learn and gain inspiration from, artists that have influenced how I approach a cityscape would include J.W Turner and contemporary artists such as Jeremy Mann & Mike Bernard to name but two.
